Founded in 1993 by the higher education community, the National Student Clearinghouse® is a nonprofit and nongovernmental organization and the leading provider of educational reporting, data exchange, verification, and research services in the U.S. Its work is performed in a trusted, secure, and private environment. The NSC research arm, the National Student Clearinghouse® Research Center™, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works with higher education institutions, states, school districts, high schools, and educational organizations to better inform practitioners and policymakers about student educational pathways and enable informed decision-making. NSC services are designed to facilitate compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, The Higher Education Act, and other applicable laws. The NSC provides a variety of time- and cost-saving benefits to students, schools, administrators, and requestors through four main services:
  • Data Exchange  Services: electronic student record exchanges, the nation 's largest provider of postsecondary transcript services
  • Financial Aid Services:  Free services, reports and analytics to help institutions meet compliance and assessment requirements that are associated with federal and state and financial aid programs
  • Research Services: Free reports through the Research Center that draw on NSC's database about student-level outcomes nationwide
  • Verification Services: Student Degree and Enrollment Verification® 
The NSC serves:
  • 3,600 participating colleges and universities
  • 97% of students in public and private institutions are enrolled by participants
  • 20,000 participating high schools
  • 70% of U.S. secondary schools enrolled in participating high schools
