T-Profile Builder (Education Design Lab)

The nonprofit Education Design Lab designs, tests, and implements higher education models that address the rapidly changing economy and emerging technology opportunities. The Lab demonstrates where technology, rigor, and design can improve equity and opportunity for historically nontraditional learners to maximize their potential in the higher education system.

Among its products is the T-Profile Builder. Following the concept of the T-shaped learner, the Lab has been using a paper prototype of this tool. It serves as a mechanism to identify the most essential combination of 21st century skills (human/durable/power), in addition to specialized technical skills for specific job roles. The Lab launched a digital version of this tool in late 2019. It continues to collect data on the most essential skills by job role across the nation’s growth industries. This data is being made public in a visual library for learners and workers to better understand the skills that employers seek.
