Launched in 2023, STEM60+ is an initiative led by Skilled Tomorrow and the University of Hawaii, partially sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), with the goal to advance this interdisciplinary field, create frameworks, as well as empower adults aged 60+ to engage in STEM learning, expanding pathways for lifelong learning, workforce opportunities, and intergenerational innovation.
STEM60+ addresses individual development and personal enrichment as well as broader workforce and social innovation goals, recognizing that older adults can continue contributing their experience and perspectives in evolving technological and scientific contexts.
Work focuses on:
In September 2023, STEM60+ organized an online workshop bringing together experts from multiple disciplines to explore how STEM education (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) can serve mature adults, including how such programs can strengthen science literacy, support health and independence, and create new roles for older learners.
The initiative is founded in principles of lifelong learning, workforce inclusion, and cross-sector collaboration. By providing STEM education opportunities for older adults, the initiative is designed to expand traditional boundaries of workforce and credentialing systems to include a demographic often overlooked in education and employment policy. It reinforces the idea that learning is continuous and adaptive, supporting participation throughout the lifespan.
