Overview

A Z-Degree refers to a degree program, typically at the associate or bachelor's level, where all the required courses and learning materials are available at zero cost to the learners. These programs are designed to minimize or eliminate the need for learners to purchase traditional textbooks or course materials. These programs significantly reduce the financial barriers associated with pursuing higher education.

Departments of higher education in several states (as well as other global efforts) are supporting Z-Degrees and the use of Open Education Resources (OERs).  Many institutions of higher education are increasingly offering Z-Degrees.

Examples

  • Colorado Open Educational Resources Grant Program - managed by the Colorado Department of Higher Education and launched in 2017, awards funds to public higher education institutions in five grant categories: Z-degree, collaborative, small group, general incentive grant, and individual courses. Z-degrees offer students the opportunity to complete their degree from start to finish with zero textbook costs.
  • The Open Course Library Project of the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges, offers course materials for more than 80 of Washington's most enrolled college courses.
  • In Arizona, the Maricopa Millions OER Project, launched in 2013, created and implemented a low-to no-cost textbook initiative to lower course material cost for learners and increase access to resources, while maintaining quality curriculum and instruction and promoting faculty and staff buy-in.  This ongoing project has inspired efforts in Arizona such as Mesa Community College's (part of Maricopa Community College District) MCC Z-Degree.
