The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is a global nonprofit association representing professionals who work with health information (HI) supporting more than one billion patient visits each year. Since its formation, the association has undergone several name changes that reflect the evolution of data analytics and technology in the healthcare profession:

Association of Record Librarians of North America: 1928 – 1938.
American Association of Medical Record Librarians: 1938 – 1970
American Medical Record Association: 1970 – 1991
American Health Information Management Association: 1991 – Present

AHIMA offers health information and informatics certifications, education and training, conferences, and other services and products. The Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) is a standing commission dedicated to assuring the competency of professionals practicing health informatics and information management (HIIM). CCHIIM provides strategic oversight of all AHIMA certification programs and establishes and enforces the standards and procedures for certification and recertification of HIIM professionals.
