Contribution Exchange is a Canadian nonprofit organization focused on making learning gained through work, life experience, community activity, and other forms of human contribution more visible, verifiable, portable, and usable. Established in Ottawa, Canada, in 2023 as the Council Advancing Work-Based Learning, the organization officially changed its name to Contribution Exchange in July 2026. The organization describes the change as a rebranding rather than a change in mission, reflecting an increasing focus on recognizing and documenting learning that occurs through contribution.
Contribution Exchange approaches work-based learning broadly. Rather than limiting it to internships, apprenticeships, or employer-sponsored education, the organization focuses on learning that develops through purposeful contribution in workplaces, communities, families, civic settings, and other contexts. Its work seeks to create systems through which this learning can be documented, recognized, assessed, and carried forward into additional education, employment, or other opportunities.
Key components of the organization’s work include:
The organization also contributes to a developing body of theory around what it calls contributive learning or contributive epistemology—the idea that knowledge can be generated through meaningful contribution and recognized within the context in which that contribution occurs. Contribution Exchange presents work-based learning not only as an educational approach but as a broader field of study. These concepts remain developing areas of scholarship; the organization has described some of its foundational principles as practitioner-derived propositions intended for further research, testing, and refinement.
