Formed in 2018, Just Equations is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reconceptualizing the role of mathematics in ensuring educational equity. Its mission is to advance evidence-based policies and strategies that help all students develop the quantitative skills needed for success in college and beyond. Its mission is based in the growing body of evidence pointing to the need and potential for redesigned math policies that support equitable college opportunity. At stake is both math learning and the broader architecture of opportunity that math requirements help shape.
The organization focuses in three areas to ensure that math requirements are valid and aligned across educational systems to support equitable student outcomes:
- Equitable Math Pathways - redesign math education to ensure that factors like race, class, ethnicity, and gender do not restrict students’ opportunities.
- Policy Advocacy - build awareness and support for policies that promote equitable outcomes in math education.
- Research and Reports - produce reports like “The Mathematics of Opportunity” which highlight how traditional math education can contribute to inequity and suggest emerging approaches for change.
Just Equation's policy goals:
- Public school policies that ensure all students have a rigorous quantitative reasoning foundation that prepares them to attend and complete college.
- Postsecondary admission and access policies that eliminate arbitrary barriers to equitable college readiness and success.
- Redesigned math pathways that reflect 21st-century needs and align with students’ academic and career aspirations.
- Well-aligned, rigorous math expectations that support equitable outcomes across education systems.
