Library Research Study: Exploring AI-Assisted Knowledge Stewardship

The Learn & Work Ecosystem Library is conducting a research study, Exploring AI-Assisted Knowledge Stewardship: Maintaining the Currency, Accuracy, and Trustworthiness of Curated Knowledge Collections (summer 2026-spring 2027).

This study explores whether AI can help organizations meet the challenge of maintaining the currency, accuracy, and trustworthiness of curated knowledge collections while preserving the human judgment, editorial integrity, transparency, and public trust upon which knowledge institutions depend.

Using the Library’s collection of more than 2,300 curated resources as a real-world research environment, the project is evaluating AI-assisted recommendations, comparing AI-generated recommendations with human judgments, and assessing the feasibility of AI-assisted drafting — all part of knowledge stewardship.

The findings will help strengthen the Library’s stewardship practices while contributing practical, transferable knowledge for digital libraries, repositories, professional associations, standards organizations, workforce intermediaries, research centers, and other organizations responsible for maintaining trusted information resources.

"Building a knowledge collection is only the beginning. Maintaining its relevance, accuracy, and usefulness over time is the larger challenge. This study explores whether AI can help organizations meet that challenge while preserving the human judgment and trust upon which knowledge institutions ultimately depend."
