Founded in North Carolina, the Hunt Institute is an independent nonprofit organization established in 2001 to inspire and inform elected officials and policymakers about key issues in education. Its educational programs focus on helping leaders to take strategic action for greater educational outcomes and student success. In 2016, The Hunt Institute joined forces with Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy to pursue research, educational partnerships, and events related to improving education policy. Programs include:
  • The Hunt-Kean Leadership Fellows program, with over 100 Fellows from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, seeks to partner with senior-level political leaders who have the knowledge, skill, and will to be effective, reform-minded education policymakers at the state level.
  • State Legislators Retreats designed to connect legislators with leading policy experts and practitioners to help them make the best decisions for all students.
  • Supporting governors and their advisors by connecting them with in-depth information from experts and providing opportunities to engage in candid dialogue about the best approaches to critical challenges facing education.
  • Postsecondary Leaders Programs designed to build state and regional leadership capacity and provide a forum for the development of statewide and community-specific strategies that increase postsecondary attainment.
  • Technical assistance resource to a growing network of state early childhood teams (including gubernatorial staff, state lawmakers, and key early childhood system leaders) advancing policy for young children and families across the nation.
  • State Leader Transition Committees -- a model to serve as a platform for incoming state education policy chief executives (state superintendents/secretaries, state higher education executive officers, and early childhood directors) to foster important discussions and build a broad network of supporters.
