Established in 2014, The SkillsCommons Repository (online library) provides open educational services and resources enabling communities, educational institutions, organizations, and businesses to prepare individuals for successful employment. The US Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program established the free and open online library called SkillsCommons to contain free and open learning materials and program support materials for job-driven workforce development. This initiative of the U.S. Department of Labor produced a comprehensive collection of workforce-related Open Educational Resources (OER) produced by over 700 community colleges across the nation.

The OER are freely available and are:

  • searchable
  • reusable
  • reviseable
  • retainable
  • distributable

and can be remixed by an individual, institution, and industry with proper attribution to the original creator of the resources. Developed under a 4+ year cooperative agreement with the Department of Labor’s TAACCCT program, SkillsCommons.org was designed and managed by the California State University Long Beach (CSULB) and its Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT). The organization works with TAACCCT partners to support TAACCCT grantees in the continued creation and contribution of OER stored in the SkillsCommons online library. SkillsCommons currently operates as a CSULB-MERLOT service following the conclusion of the cooperative agreement with the U.S. DOL.
