The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876. The AAMC represents medical schools, teaching hospitals, and academic health systems across the United States. Its primary objectives include enhancing medical education, fostering medical research, and advocating for policies that improve the healthcare system and the general health of individuals.
The AAMC, through collaboration with its member institutions, works to provide programs and initiatives with the goal of ensuring medical professionals are well-prepared to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare system. This involves developing educational programs, conducting research to address health disparities, and advocating for policies that support a diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce.
Many of the initiatives address inequality in the medical field such as the gender gap and racial disparity. In January 2025, AAMC in collaboration with the National Medical Association announced three Illinois grant awardees who will use the funds in projects to increase the number of Black men in medicine.
