Overview

The nonprofit Education Design Lab designs, tests, and implements higher education models that address the rapidly changing economy and emerging technology opportunities. The Lab demonstrates where technology, rigor, and design can improve equity and opportunity for historically nontraditional learners to maximize their potential in the higher education system.

Among its products is the T-Profile Builder. Following the concept of the T-shaped learner, the Lab has been using a paper prototype of this tool. It serves as a mechanism to identify the most essential combination of durable skills (human/durable/power), in addition to specialized technical skills for specific job roles.

In late 2019, the Lab launched a digital version of this tool. The T-Profile is a visual construct to get employers to be honest and precise about their job descriptions. The top horizontal portion asks for the top 3 priority durable skills. While the vertical stem portion asks for each credential and technical skill to be prioritized by required, preferred and level or importance. This creates a visual summary of the critical mix of skill representations for that specified job role.

It continues to collect data on the most essential skills by job role across the nation’s growth industries. This data is made public in a visual library for learners and workers to better understand the skills that employers seek.
