Inventory of Community College Baccalaureate-Degree Programs

Overview

Currently, 25 states allow their community colleges to offer some baccalaureate degrees: California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and West Virginia.

The Community College Baccalaureate Association (CCBA) has provided leadership since 1999 in promoting affordable access to community college baccalaureate degrees as a means of closing the nation’s racial, ethnic, and economic gaps. The CCBA’s services include research, publications, best practices, state legislation, conferences, and consultants that guide and advise higher education institutions advocating for, developing, and/or implementing their baccalaureate programs.

State Inventory: Baccalaureate Degrees by State

To develop an accessible database about CCB-programs, the CCBA began development of the first national inventory of CCB-degree programs in early 2021. The inventory enables searching of CCB-programs by state, institution, program of study, type of bachelor’s degree (e.g., bachelor of science, bachelor of applied science, bachelor of nursing), and 6-digit Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code.

The following data sources are used to inform development of the inventory:

  • The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) where institutions are identified by their Carnegie Classification as baccalaureate conferring, associates dominant, or mixed mission.
  • State agency websites.
  • Public records confirming state-level program approval.
  • Interviews with state agency, professional association, and other state leaders.

CCB-degree programs documented by states are confirmed through institutional website searches, and other public records and personal interviews to corroborate approval and implementation of CCB-degree programs. The national inventory is updated on a regular basis by the CCBA national office staff.

This work is supported by CCBA’s membership and grants from the ECMC Foundation and the Joyce Foundation.
