Overview

The Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) initiative is the signature approach to learning assessment from the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).

Recognizing the need for colleges and universities to provide clear evidence of learning from admission to graduation, and recognizing the limitations of the one-size-fits-all snapshot approach of standardized tests, AAC&U developed a series of rubrics to evaluate learner work within a regular curriculum.

Developed between 2007 and 2009, the 16 VALUE rubrics grew out of AAC&U's Essential Learning Outcomes, and evaluate knowledge in traditional academic subjects as well as areas of personal and social responsibility.

The VALUE approach to assessment involves:

VALUE Rubrics - Open educational resources (OER) for educators to use in learning assessment, covering a spectrum of 16 learning outcomes, with performance descriptors:

  • Civic Engagement - Local and Global
  • Creative Thinking
  • Critical Thinking
  • Ethical Reasoning
  • Foundations and Skills for Lifelong Learning
  • Global Learning
  • Information Literacy
  • Inquiry and Analysis
  • Integrative Learning
  • Intercultural Knowledge and Competence
  • Oral Communication
  • Problem Solving
  • Quantitative Literacy
  • Reading
  • Teamwork
  • Written Communication

VALUE Scoring Collaborative - formerly the VALUE Institute, uses a digital repository for learner work to be uploaded and then evaluated by certified faculty and educators using the VALUE rubrics, in order to create a national macro-view of higher education learning outcomes

VALUE Academy of Professional Development - webinars, workshops and online trainings for faculty and higher education professionals to effectively implement the VALUE approach to assessment, including:

  • VALUE Calibration Training
  • VALUE Assessment Accelerator

VALUE ADD (Assignment Design and Diagnostic) Tools - a series of tools being developed by an international team for faculty and instructional designers to create assignments with learning outcomes aligned to specific VALUE rubrics:

  • Critical Thinking VALUE ADD Tool
  • Written Communication VALUE ADD Tool
