The GitLab Foundation is a remote, independent, global private foundation associated with GitLab Inc. The Foundation focuses on economic mobility for all.  It invests in programs and leaders that improve lifetime earning potential for people around the world living below a living wage. The Foundation’s vision is a world in which one million more people and their families can afford a better life.

The Foundation's investments target three areas: (1) creating opportunities for individuals; (2) improving labor market efficiency; and (3) strengthening collective action among key stakeholders.

In April 2023, the Foundation announced its first major grant of $2.9 million to national nonprofit Jobs for the Future (JFF) in collaboration with the Burning Glass Institute. The grant will enable the Educational Quality Outcomes Standards (EQOS) framework to measure education and training programs based on employment and earnings outcomes. JFF and the Burning Glass Institute will incorporate new measures of racial, gender, and income equity, and create consumer and employer-friendly applications that make it easier for job seekers and employers in the U.S. to assess a wide variety of education and training programs.

Examples of the Foundation's work include:

  • AI for Economic Opportunity Fund
    • A partnership that focuses on developing and deploying prototype tools, gathering user feedback and building evidence of outcomes.
  • Green Jobs for Economic Opportunity
    • A fund that supports organizations and multisectoral in exploring or developing early-stage initiatives to improve economic mobility.
  • Learning for Action Fund Grants
    • A capacity-building initiative designed to deepend impact measurements across its global network of grantees to empower organizations to advance their ability to track and validate outcomes, collect participant feedback, and refine program design based on real-world data.
