Overview

The U.S. Department of Education maintains an Open Data Platform (ODP) at data.gov.ed.  The department’s public data profiles are available in a machine-readable, open format and can be searched for and accessed without login restrictions.

This online catalog was developed to modernize the department’s data management practices in accordance with the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018 (or OPEN Government Data Act, Pub.L. 115–435).

Data is currently organized into the following browsable groupings:

  • Data Profiles - full list of data assets
  • Organization - grouped data assets by the organizations that manage them
  • Collections, Categories - logical groupings of data assets
  • Trending Data Profiles - data assets most recently accessed by ODP users
  • New Data - data assets most recently added to the inventory

Data within the collection can be of use to various constituents. Examples include:

  • Multiple related datasets
  • Structure and encoding details
  • Metadata
  • Budgetary data
  • Program and grant financial data
  • Program performance
  • Assessment data
  • Local school and district data
  • Support for underserved communities
  • College and career guidance

Metadata displayed in this collection conforms to the US-DCAT schema.
