Overview

Frontloading embedded non-degree pathways is a method to address workers and learners who are looking to re- or upskill quickly to transition jobs. It entails reordering degree pathways to frontload embedded non-degree credentials.

College and statewide decisionmakers were encouraged to develop pathways that would quickly support displaced workers by getting them the skills and transferables they need to transition jobs. This allows for workers to earn credentials upfront and can then have the opportunities to transition jobs earlier in their degree pathway. While embedding credentials in a non-degree or degree pathway is not necessarily a new idea, this approach means that if worker-learners are forced to pause or stop their education for various reasons, they do so with some transferable credentials as opposed to none.

Frontloading non-degree credentials is part of career education strategies and policies that benefit workers. It incorporates credentials and credential/career/guided pathways. It is a method of connecting workers with needed industry credentials.

Types/Examples

Workers earn their credentials early in their degree or non-degree pathways. The credentials are awarded prior to completion.

History

This strategy gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic as worker/learners, employers, and educators raced to re- and upskill workers. The Education Strategy Group advised this methodology (and similar versions) in 2020 and 2021 publications.
