Overview

Cedefop is one of the European Union’s decentralized agencies. Founded in 1975 and based in Greece since 1995, Cedefop supports development of European vocational education and training (VET) policies and assists in their implementation. The agency helps the European Commission, European Union (27 member states), and the social partners to develop the right European VET policies.

As part of its agenda on VET’s future, Cedefop has launched a new study on the role of microcredentials in facilitating learning for employment. The study will explain the characteristics of microcredentials; their added value to individual learners, employees and employers; and their impact on current qualifications and recognition systems.

Although the role of microcredentials in higher education has received much attention with the growth of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), their influence on labor market training is not well understood. While task- and competence-oriented certificates—often earned in short-term programs—already play an important role in the labor market, it is not always clear whether microcredentials represent something genuinely new and innovative.

The project work is divided into three separate but interlinked themes:

  1. Mapping microcredentials in European Union labor-market-related education and training
  2. Microcredentials and evolving qualifications systems
  3. Microcredentials and their added value for end users.
