The AI Now Institute, established in 2017, conducts research on the societal and policy implications of artificial intelligence (AI). It aims to shift the current direction of AI development away from unchecked commercial surveillance, the concentration of power in a few corporations, and insufficient public oversight. Since its inception, AI Now has been influential in shaping discussions about the social impacts of AI and the industry driving it. In 2021, its leadership advised the US Federal Trade Commission on AI, highlighting the importance and impact of its work. As an independent policy research institute since mid-2022, AI Now focuses on identifying opportunities for policy change, promoting long-term strategic narratives for the field, and fostering collaborative action with allies.

Research areas focus on:

  • AI Industrial Policy
  • Algorithmic Accountability
  • Antitrust
  • Biometrics & Affect
  • Climate
  • Data Minimization
  • Global Digital Trade
  • Labor & Tech
  • Large-Scale AI Models
  • Privacy & Competition
  • Regulating Big Tech’s data advantage.

The organization’s funding comes from foundations. Funding is structured to support broad research and policy goals and is not earmarked to specific projects, nor does it shape nor dictate research outcomes. AI Now does not currently take funding from corporate donors, including tech companies whose practices and products the organization’s work is dedicated to examining.
