Founded in 1987, the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is a nonprofit professional association of U.S.-based, independent, nongovernmental organizations that provide expert evaluation services for academic credentials earned outside the United States. NACES itself is an association that sets the standards; it does not perform the individual credential evaluations. Individuals needing an evaluation must select one of the member organizations from the NACES member list to obtain a report. Each member organization has its own specific procedures, costs, and report formats.

NACES screens and certifies independent evaluation agencies, ensuring they adhere to a defined code of ethics and professional practices. Members undergo yearly recertification and periodic on-site inspections to maintain their standing.

Its members' evaluation reports are widely trusted and required by many U.S. colleges and universities, employers, professional licensing boards, and government agencies (such as for immigration purposes) to understand the U.S. equivalency of foreign education. The association also facilitates the sharing of information among its members regarding international educational systems, institutions, and the detection of fraudulent documents.
