1EdTech Europe is an independent, international nonprofit membership organization based in Brussels, Belgium, that works across primary and secondary education, higher education, vocational education and training, non-formal learning, and related learning-to-work systems to advance an open, trusted, and interoperable digital education ecosystem across Europe. The organization became an independent legal entity in May 2026 and is part of the broader global 1EdTech network.

1EdTech Europe was established through collaboration between 1EdTech and the Knowledge Innovation Centre, building on several years of 1EdTech activity and member engagement in Europe. The organization provides regional governance for European members while remaining connected to the development and use of 1EdTech global interoperability standards. European member organizations participate in the governance of 1EdTech Europe through its General Assembly and other leadership and technical structures.

The organization focuses particularly on adapting and applying global educational technology standards within European policy, regulatory, and educational environments. Its work addresses European requirements and frameworks related to data privacy, digital credentials, student data, accessibility, artificial intelligence, and cross-border education. Major areas of work include:

  • Digital credentials
    • Aligning Open Badges and other global interoperability standards with European Digital Credentials for Learning, Europass, the European Learning Model, and related European frameworks.
  • Student data
    • Supporting European and national applications of standards such as OneRoster and Edu-API and their interoperability with European data models.
  • Trusted educational technology
    • Incorporating European regulatory requirements, including the General Data Protection Regulation, European Union Artificial Intelligence Act, and European Accessibility Act, into verification and certification approaches for educational technology.
  • European standards profiles
    • Developing implementations and profiles of global 1EdTech standards that address European institutional, legal, privacy, and policy requirements.
  • Community and collaboration
    • Bringing together educational institutions, national education bodies, policymakers, technology and service providers, and other organizations to shape standards and digital infrastructure for education in Europe.

Membership is available to eligible organizations headquartered in Council of Europe member states, including educational institutions and providers, national public bodies, and technology and service providers. Organizations headquartered outside Europe that have European operations may participate in certain European activities through arrangements connected to their broader 1EdTech membership.

1EdTech Europe also sponsors Learning Impact Europe, its annual flagship convening focused on educational technology, interoperability, open standards, and digital learning in the European context.
