Founded in 1945, the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is the nation’s oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the advancement of aging research, education, and practice. It brings together people from many fields, such as health care, policy, biology, social work, economics, education, to study aging and to apply that knowledge in practice and policy.

Key examples of GSA work:

  • Publishes peer-reviewed journals on aging covering biological, medical, psychological, social and policy aspects.
  • Holds an annual scientific meeting where professionals share research.
  • Connects professionals via member interest groups (65+ topic areas).
  • Engages in policy and public-information work about aging issues.

Examples of recent initiatives by GSA include:

  • Educational Resources for Workforce Development through its GSA Enrich Platform: Educational resources to prepare and retool the aging services workforce. This includes micro-credentialing programs and partnerships with academic and community-based organizations to enhance the skills of professionals working with older adults.
  • Engages in coalitions, monitors federal advisory committees, and submits comment letters and statements to influence policies affecting older adults, such as advocating for research funding for the National Institute on Aging and for caregiver support legislation.
  • The society produced a report titled “Concentric Value of Vaccination: Intersecting Health, Economic, and Societal Benefits” that examines the broader value of adult immunization.
