Overview

Tahatū Career Navigator is New Zealand's national online career-planning platform, developed and operated by the Tertiary Education Commission. Tahatū is part of New Zealand's broader National Careers System Strategy and Action Plan. The Career Navigator is free to all New Zealanders and is intended to support career decisions throughout life, including for students, people entering or returning to the workforce, people considering further education or training, and people changing careers.

The platform brings education, training, and labor-market information together in one place. It connects nearly 100 school subjects, more than 4,000 qualifications and courses, and more than 800 career ideas. Information is drawn from multiple national data sources and is designed to show relationships among school subjects, qualifications, training, occupations, and employment.

Tahatū also includes a Career Practice Hub for people providing career education, information, and guidance.

In 2026, the Tertiary Education Commission added Path Finder, a tool that allows users to explore different routes into occupations through combinations of school subjects, education and training, and employment experience. Path Finder matches career ideas to study, training and school subject options, shows different ways to get into a career to compare options, and provides next steps to make a career plan.

Background

The national strategy was developed in response to stakeholder calls for stronger government leadership of the careers system, a need to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the system, economic and structural changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to better align career services with other government priorities. The strategy seeks to strengthen connections and coordination across the careers system and improve access to high-quality career information, advice, and guidance.

Tahatū Career Navigator was developed by the Tertiary Education Commission as a new national career-planning website, expanding on the information and functionality previously available through careers.govt.nz. Careers.govt.nz was retired on December 4, 2025, and replaced by Tahatū. In August 2026, the Tertiary Education Commission added Path Finder, an interactive tool within Tahatū that uses education and workforce data to help users explore different pathways into careers.

Partners

The Tertiary Education Commission developed Tahatū in consultation with the education community, career practitioners, students, families, government agencies, and other careers-system stakeholders. Data used within the platform come from sources including the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Statistics New Zealand, Inland Revenue, and tertiary education organizations. Occupational information from Tahatū is also used by other New Zealand government agencies.

Funding

New Zealand government-funded initiative operated by the Tertiary Education Commission as part of its statutory career-information responsibilities and the National Careers System Strategy.
