LEGO Foundation
The LEGO Foundation is an independent Danish corporate foundation that works with organizations, governments, researchers, educators, communities, and families to improve children's learning, development, and well-being. Established in Denmark in 1986, the Foundation has historically been associated with research and programs promoting learning through play.
The Foundation's current mission is broader: to create conditions in which children can thrive and grow. Its philanthropic activities support education, research, child development, learning through play, children affected by conflict and humanitarian crises, children with special educational needs, and initiatives serving children in Denmark. Grantmaking remains its primary approach, supplemented by impact investing.
The Foundation typically works through partner organizations rather than directly operating programs. Partners have included nongovernmental organizations, research institutions, education systems, governments, and other philanthropic organizations. Its investments have supported early childhood education, teacher development, playful learning, parenting programs, education in humanitarian settings, research on child development, and efforts to integrate play-based approaches into education systems.
The Foundation has a dual purpose: it serves as a long-term co-owner of the LEGO Group (the Foundation owns 25% of the LEGO Group) while using resources generated through that ownership and its investments to support initiatives in education, research, and child development.
Over time, the Foundation has made major investments in learning through play and education, including large-scale initiatives for children experiencing displacement and humanitarian crises and partnerships designed to strengthen early childhood and school-based learning.
