The National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) is a nonprofit organization born out of an American Library Association (ALA) initiative in 1981, and realized as an organization in 1983. NCL is an alliance of organizations that advance adult education, family literacy, and English language acquisition in the U.S. through public awareness campaigns, policy advocacy, and resource-sharing. It works to increase funding and support for adult literacy programs by educating policymakers, collaborating with other groups, and building public support.

NCL's key efforts include:

  • Public awareness
    • Raise awareness through events like the annual National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week and by using social media to inform the public and policymakers about the importance of adult literacy.
  • Resource and information sharing
    • Serve as a resource for information on adult education issues, especially adult literacy, and provides tools to help advocates educate their communities and Congress.
  • Collaboration
    • Collaborates with other education-focused organizations and groups that address the needs of underserved populations, such as the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.
