Overview

The Technician Economy Foundry™, a property of Unmudl Public Benefit Corp., is a research, convening, measurement, and mobilization initiative focused on strengthening the nation's capacity to prepare and deploy technicians across industries. The Foundry is the research and framework development arm of the broader Technician Economy ™, an economic and workforce framework that emphasizes the role of technicians in installing, operating, maintaining, and supporting increasingly complex technologies and infrastructure.

The Foundry focuses on four functions:

  • Research: examining technician occupations, skills, employer demand, workforce pathways, and regional labor markets;
  • Measurement: developing ways to measure technician capacity, including the supply of technicians, employer demand, training capacity, and regional workforce alignment;
  • Foresight: examining how artificial intelligence, automation, industrial investment, and other changes are affecting technician roles and skill requirements; and
  • Convening: bringing together employers, community and technical colleges, workforce organizations, economic development organizations, funders, policymakers, researchers, and other partners.

The Foundry is developing regional analyses and supporting regional Technician Roundtables intended to identify common technician workforce needs across employers and industries. Regional work has included Houston, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, Kentuckiana, and other areas.

The Foundry also supports development of national leadership and research structures associated with the Technician Economy, including the Technician Economy Futures Council, National Competitiveness Council, Foundry Fellows, and proposed research products such as regional briefs and a Technician Capacity Index. Several of these activities remain under development.

Background

The Foundry emerged as part of the Technician Economy's national activation work in 2026. The broader Technician Economy framework was publicly launched in May 2026, followed by regional activities and the inaugural Technician Economy Review in June 2026. A separate launch date for the Foundry has not been publicly identified.
