Launched in May 2021, the Nation Fund for Independent Journalism is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to expand opportunities for diverse voices and perspectives and educate early‐career journalists in order to strengthen independent media. It runs several programs, such as internships (editorial and publishing), the StudentNation project, the Student Journalism Conference, Nation Classroom (educational materials for schools), and fellowships. Some of its programs (for example, The Nation’s internship program) predate the Fund itself by many years.

Key programs:

  • Founded in 2007, StudentNation is an editorial project aimed at engaging student journalists — particularly college‐aged ones — in rigorous, edited, fact‐checked reporting and first‐person accounts. The program encourages students to write about campus campaigns, local student reporting, issues affecting young people and legislative issues, and young activists’ perspectives. It offers mentorship, editorial oversight by Nation staff, and exposure through publication. This program publishes over 100 original pieces each year, featuring first-person accounts and reporting on student activism and issues relevant to young people.
  • The Fund offers summer internships, fellowships, and a student journalism conference, which provide opportunities for students to engage with independent journalism.
  • The annual Puffin Nation Fund Student Journalism Conference is open to undergraduate and graduate students at two- and four-year schools in the United States.
