Established in 2005 and based in Oakland, California, College Futures Foundation uses a wide variety of human and financial resources and tools—including nearly $20 million in grants annually—to work toward its mission to increase postsecondary completion for learners who are underserved; and center learners and their aspirations and needs on the path to achieving their educational goals.

The Foundation collaborates with organizations and leaders across California’s postsecondary ecosystem and beyond that share a vision of equity and upward mobility for Californians. The Foundation is based on the belief that the equitable education system of the future is one that enables every learner to achieve their dreams and participate in an inclusive and robust economy, and is realized through focused, determined, and active leadership and partnership.

Focus areas for work include:

  • Advancing Learner-Centered Innovations: fostering creative and effective educational experiences through learner-centered policies and practices. Examples include cost/affordability, access, time to degree, learner supports, credit portability, and flexible learning environments.
  • Aligning Postsecondary Education for Economic Mobility: advancing deeper understanding and a new narrative regarding the future of postsecondary education as a driver of economic mobility, primarily through research and convenings.
  • Reimagining Education for the Future of Work: ensuring that education aligns with an ever-evolving economy. The main method includes reimagining and redesigning policies, narratives, and financing mechanisms to support lifelong upskilling and reskilling and increasing equitable opportunity.

The role of the Foundation as funder and strategic thought partner involves focusing the field by elevating ideas, innovations, and changemakers inside and outside public higher education; and brokering relationships between thought and innovation leaders, decisionmakers, and expert practitioners with purviews in policy, practice, and funding.
