AI fluency is the practical ability to work effectively, safely, responsibly, and adaptively with artificial intelligence systems and tools. It includes knowing when and how to use AI, communicating effectively with AI systems, critically evaluating and improving their outputs, recognizing when human judgment should take precedence, and adapting practices as AI technologies and capabilities change.

AI fluency is related to, but not synonymous with, AI literacy. AI literacy generally emphasizes understanding AI, its capabilities and limitations, and the principles of responsible use. AI fluency emphasizes the ability to apply that understanding effectively in real-world situations. A person may understand how AI works and its risks but still lack the practical experience and judgment needed to use it fluently.

Definitions remain evolving; and some organizations use AI literacy, AI proficiency, and AI fluency interchangeably or as overlapping levels of capability.
